Airborne transmission is a more efficient form of indirect contact, where infectious agents are released into the air and can remain suspended for long periods, allowing them to be inhaled by individuals at greater distances.

Vector-borne transmission involves an intermediate organism, such as an insect (like mosquitoes or ticks), that carries the pathogen from an infected host to a susceptible one. This is a significant route for diseases like malaria and Lyme disease. Finally, fecal-oral transmission occurs when infectious agents present in the feces of an infected person contaminate food or water, which is then ingested by another person. This route is common for gastrointestinal infections like cholera and hepatitis A.
