Süttiminele is an Estonian term used to refer to the ignition process in which a material reaches sufficient energy to sustain combustion. It includes initiation by an external energy source such as a spark, a flame, a hot surface, or friction, as well as autoignition, where a material reaches its ignition temperature without an external flame.

In chemistry and fire safety, ignition point or autoignition temperature are key parameters. The flammability range of a vapour–air mixture and the presence of oxygen influence ignition likelihood. Materials are classified by ignition characteristics, including flash point, autoignition temperature, and energy release rate. The balance of heat production and heat capacity determines whether ignition can be sustained.

In practical settings, controlled süttimine is essential for efficient burning in engines and industrial furnaces, while uncontrolled ignition can lead to fires or explosions. Risk assessment uses testing standards that evaluate ignition sources, temperature thresholds, and protective measures such as ignition-proof equipment, adequate ventilation, and source-control strategies.

In Estonian usage, süttimisele functions in technical text to denote the act or process of ignition, and appears as a case form in phrases indicating movement toward ignition.
