This cycle describes how carbon atoms continually travel from the atmosphere to the Earth and then back into the atmosphere. The main reservoirs of carbon include the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. Processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion play crucial roles in moving carbon between these reservoirs.

Photosynthesis, carried out by plants and algae, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it into organic compounds. When organisms respire, they release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Decomposition of dead organic matter by microorganisms also returns carbon to the soil and atmosphere. Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have significantly increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to concerns about climate change.
