Süsinikdioksüdeem, also known as carbon dioxide, is a chemical compound with the formula CO2. It is a colorless, odorless gas that is naturally present in the Earth's atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is produced by the combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as by the respiration of living organisms. It is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps heat in the Earth's atmosphere and contributes to the greenhouse effect, which is a significant factor in global warming.

Carbon dioxide is also essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy in the form of glucose, or sugar. This process is crucial for the production of oxygen and the growth of plants.

In the context of climate change, the increase in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is a major concern. The burning of fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and other human activities have led to a significant increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which are now higher than at any point in the past 800,000 years. This increase is contributing to the warming of the planet and the associated changes in climate patterns.

Carbon dioxide can be captured and stored, a process known as carbon capture and storage (CCS), or used in various industrial processes, such as the production of synthetic fuels and chemicals. However, these technologies are still in the development and testing phase and are not yet widely implemented.
