Sähköjännitys, often referred to as voltage in English, is a fundamental concept in electricity. It represents the electric potential difference between two points in an electric circuit. Think of it as the "pressure" that drives electric charge, also known as current, to flow. Without voltage, electric current would not flow, just as water would not flow through a pipe without a difference in pressure.

The standard unit for measuring electric potential difference is the volt, symbolized by the letter V. One volt is defined as the energy of one joule per unit of electric charge, specifically one coulomb. Therefore, voltage can be understood as the amount of work done per unit charge to move that charge between two points.

In a simple circuit, a voltage source, such as a battery or a power outlet, creates this potential difference. This difference causes electrons (or other charge carriers) to move from an area of lower potential to an area of higher potential, creating an electric current. The higher the voltage, the greater the "push" on the charges, and potentially, the larger the current that can flow through a given resistance.
