Szupercellás is a Hungarian term used to describe a specific type of thunderstorm known as a supercell. Supercells are characterized by their rotating updraft, called a mesocyclone, which can persist for extended periods. This rotation is a key feature that distinguishes them from ordinary thunderstorms and contributes to their potential for severe weather.

The development of a supercell requires a specific atmospheric environment. This includes atmospheric instability, whereby warm, moist air near the surface rises rapidly into cooler, drier air above. Additionally, significant wind shear is necessary, meaning the wind speed and/or direction changes with altitude. This wind shear helps to tilt and organize the updraft, initiating and sustaining the rotation within the storm.

Supercells are responsible for producing some of the most severe weather phenomena, including large hail, damaging straight-line winds, and tornadoes. The presence of a mesocyclone significantly increases the probability of tornado formation, although not all supercells produce tornadoes. Radar signatures, such as a hook echo and velocity couplets, are used by meteorologists to identify supercells and assess their potential for severe weather. Understanding the dynamics of supercells is crucial for issuing timely and accurate warnings to protect the public.
