Syvyysvaikutelmien is a Finnish term that translates to "depth perception" or "sense of depth" in English. It refers to the ability to perceive the world in three dimensions and to judge the distances between objects and oneself. This complex visual process involves the brain interpreting various cues from both eyes and within each eye.

Binocular cues, which rely on the input from both eyes, are crucial for depth perception. Stereopsis, the perception of depth and three-dimensional form produced by the slight difference in the images received by each eye, is a primary example. This disparity, known as retinal disparity, is processed by the brain to calculate distances. Convergence, the inward turning of the eyes when focusing on a near object, also provides depth information.

Monocular cues, which can be perceived with just one eye, also contribute to our sense of depth. These include relative size, where larger objects are perceived as closer; interposition or occlusion, where an object blocking another is seen as closer; linear perspective, where parallel lines appear to converge in the distance; and texture gradient, where textures become finer and less detailed with distance. Light and shadow, as well as motion parallax, where closer objects appear to move faster than distant ones when the observer is in motion, are further monocular cues.

The accurate interpretation of these cues allows us to navigate our environment effectively, avoid obstacles, and interact with objects at appropriate distances. Deficiencies in depth perception can arise from various conditions affecting the eyes or the brain, impacting an individual's spatial awareness and ability to perform visually guided tasks.
