Syvyysnäkö, also known as stereopsis or stereoscopic vision, is the ability to perceive the world in three dimensions and to judge the distance of objects. This ability is primarily achieved through binocular vision, meaning the use of both eyes. Each eye receives a slightly different image of the same object due to their separation on the face. The brain then processes these two disparate images and merges them into a single, coherent perception of depth.

The difference between the images received by each eye is called binocular disparity. The greater the disparity, the closer the object is perceived to be. This disparity is analyzed by specific areas in the visual cortex of the brain. Syvyysnäkö allows for accurate judgment of distances, which is crucial for tasks such as navigating environments, catching a ball, or performing delicate manipulations.

While binocular vision is the dominant mechanism for syvyysnäkö, monocular cues also contribute to depth perception. These include things like relative size, interposition (where one object partially blocks another), linear perspective, texture gradients, and the apparent movement of objects as the observer moves. However, the stereoscopic effect provided by binocular vision is generally considered the most powerful and precise method for perceiving depth.
