Stereokémiája is the branch of chemistry that studies the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules and the effect of this arrangement on the chemical properties of the molecule. It is concerned with molecules that have the same molecular formula and connectivity but differ in the spatial orientation of their atoms.

The fundamental concept in stereochemistry is chirality. A chiral molecule is one that is non-superimposable on its mirror image, much like a left hand is not superimposable on a right hand. Molecules that are superimposable on their mirror images are called achiral. The non-superimposable mirror images of a chiral molecule are known as enantiomers. Enantiomers have identical physical properties, such as melting point and boiling point, but they can differ significantly in their biological activity and their interaction with plane-polarized light.

Another important aspect of stereochemistry is isomerism. Stereoisomers are isomers that have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of atoms but differ in their spatial arrangement. Diastereomers are stereoisomers that are not enantiomers. Unlike enantiomers, diastereomers can have different physical and chemical properties. This includes geometric isomers (cis-trans isomers), which arise from restricted rotation around a bond, typically a double bond or a ring structure.
