Soojusülekanne is the Estonian term for heat transfer, a fundamental concept in physics and engineering. It describes the movement of thermal energy from a hotter region to a cooler region. This process occurs through three primary mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact between particles. In solids, this happens as atoms vibrate and collide, passing energy along. Metals are excellent conductors due to their free electrons, while insulators like wood or plastic transfer heat poorly.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which include liquids and gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks. This creates a circulating current that distributes heat. Examples include boiling water or atmospheric weather patterns.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, such as infrared radiation. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium and can travel through a vacuum. The sun warming the Earth is a prime example of heat transfer by radiation.
