Soluentsyyymejä refers to cellular respiration, a metabolic process that occurs in living organisms. It is the mechanism by which cells convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products. This process is fundamental to life, providing the energy needed for all cellular activities, such as muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis.

The primary nutrients involved in cellular respiration are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which are broken down into smaller molecules. The most common pathway involves glucose, a simple sugar. Cellular respiration can occur in the presence or absence of oxygen. Aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen, is the more efficient process and produces a significantly larger amount of ATP. It involves several stages: glycolysis, the Krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle), and oxidative phosphorylation.

Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and breaks down glucose into pyruvate. In aerobic conditions, pyruvate then enters the mitochondria. Inside the mitochondria, pyruvate is converted into acetyl-CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle. The Krebs cycle further oxidizes these molecules, generating electron carriers like NADH and FADH2. These carriers then deliver electrons to the electron transport chain, the final stage of aerobic respiration, where most of the ATP is produced through a process called chemiosmosis.

Anaerobic respiration, which occurs without oxygen, is less efficient and typically involves fermentation. In this case, glycolysis is followed by fermentation pathways that regenerate NAD+ to allow glycolysis to continue, but produce much less ATP. Examples of fermentation include lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation. The efficiency and specific pathways of cellular respiration can vary between different types of organisms and even within different cell types of the same organism.
