The Situationist International was a revolutionary Marxist organization founded in 1957. It emerged from the merger of the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, the International Surrealist Movement, and the Psychogeographical Committee of London. Its primary aim was to dismantle capitalist society and its pervasive cultural alienation. The Situationists believed that everyday life under capitalism had become a spectacle, where authentic human experience was replaced by prefabricated images and commodities.

Central to their theory was the concept of the "dérive," a spontaneous wandering through urban environments aimed at uncovering the hidden emotional and psychological geography of cities. They also promoted the "détournement," a technique of recontextualizing existing cultural elements to expose their underlying ideological messages or to create new meanings. The Situationists published a journal, Internationale Situationniste, which served as a platform for their theoretical writings and critiques. Key figures included Guy Debord, Raoul Vaneigem, and Asger Jorn. While the group officially dissolved in 1972, its ideas have had a lasting influence on various artistic, philosophical, and political movements, including punk, post-structuralism, and anti-globalization activism. Their critique of consumerism and alienation continues to resonate in contemporary discussions about media, culture, and society.
