Sisältötyyppi, or MIME type, is a standard way of identifying the type of data contained in a file or transmitted over a network. It's a two-part identifier, consisting of a type and a subtype, separated by a slash. For example, text/html indicates HTML text, and image/jpeg indicates a JPEG image.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) maintains a registry of official MIME types. However, developers can also define their own custom MIME types. When a web browser receives a file, it uses the content type to determine how to handle it. For instance, if the content type is text/html, the browser will render it as a web page. If it's application/pdf, the browser might prompt the user to download the file or open it in a PDF reader.

Content types are crucial for the proper functioning of the internet. They ensure that data is interpreted and presented correctly across different platforms and applications. Without them, it would be difficult for systems to distinguish between different kinds of data, leading to errors and misinterpretations.
