Siimaeläimet, scientifically known as Chordata, represent a diverse phylum of animals that includes all vertebrates as well as a few invertebrate groups. The defining characteristic of chordates, present at some stage of their development, is the presence of a notochord, a flexible rod that provides skeletal support. Other key features include a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail.

In vertebrates, the notochord is typically replaced by a segmented vertebral column during development, forming the backbone. This phylum encompasses a vast array of life, from the familiar fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals to the more primitive tunicates and lancelets.
