Siaalidase, also known as sialidase or neuraminidase, is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of sialic acid residues from glycoproteins and glycolipids. These enzymes are found in a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and eukaryotes. In biological systems, siaalidase plays a crucial role in processes such as cell signaling, microbial pathogenicity, and the modulation of immune responses.

In virology, viral siaalidases are particularly well-studied, notably in influenza viruses where the enzyme facilitates the release of new virions from infected host cells by cleaving sialic acid residues from the cell surface. This activity is essential for the spread of the virus within the host organism. Because of its importance in the life cycle of influenza viruses, siaalidase is a target for antiviral drugs, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza), which inhibit its activity and help contain the infection.

Bacterial siaalidases contribute to pathogenicity by assisting bacteria in colonizing host tissues, evading immune responses, or acquiring nutrients through the degradation of sialylated glycoproteins. These enzymes are also of interest in biotechnology and research, where they are used to study glycan structures and modify glycoproteins.
