Selkänikaman refers to a vertebra in the lumbar region of the spine. The lumbar spine is the lower part of the back, situated between the thoracic spine (upper back) and the sacrum. Humans typically have five lumbar vertebrae, numbered L1 through L5. These vertebrae are the largest and strongest in the vertebral column, as they bear the majority of the body's weight.

Each lumbar vertebra shares a common structure. It consists of a vertebral body, which is a solid, cylindrical mass that supports weight, and a vertebral arch, which projects posteriorly from the body. The vertebral arch encloses the spinal canal, a protective channel for the spinal cord. The arch is formed by several bony projections, including pedicles, laminae, and spinous and transverse processes. These processes serve as attachment points for muscles and ligaments that support and move the spine.

The intervertebral discs, which are fibrocartilaginous cushions, are located between the vertebral bodies of the lumbar vertebrae. These discs act as shock absorbers and allow for movement between the vertebrae. The lumbar vertebrae are crucial for providing flexibility and stability to the lower back, enabling activities such as bending, twisting, and walking. Conditions affecting the lumbar vertebrae can lead to back pain and mobility issues.
