Sarkolemmelle refers to the cell membrane of a muscle cell, also known as a myocyte. It plays a crucial role in the function and integrity of muscle tissue. The sarkolemmelle is a selectively permeable barrier that encloses the sarcoplasm, the cytoplasm of a muscle cell. It is composed of a lipid bilayer, similar to other cell membranes, but also contains specialized proteins essential for muscle activity.

One of the primary functions of the sarkolemmelle is to conduct electrical impulses, known as action potentials, across the muscle cell surface. These impulses are vital for initiating muscle contraction. The sarkolemmelle invaginates into the muscle fiber, forming structures called transverse tubules (T-tubules). These T-tubules are extensions of the sarkolemmelle that penetrate deep into the muscle fiber, allowing the electrical signal to reach the interior of the cell quickly and uniformly. This rapid transmission of the action potential is critical for coordinated muscle contraction.

Furthermore, the sarkolemmelle is involved in the regulation of ion concentrations within the muscle cell. It contains various ion channels and pumps that control the movement of ions such as sodium, potassium, and calcium. Calcium ions, in particular, are crucial for muscle contraction, and their release and reuptake are tightly regulated by proteins embedded within the sarkolemmelle and the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a specialized organelle within muscle cells.
