A sarcomere is the basic contractile unit of striated muscle tissue. It is the smallest functional unit of a muscle fiber, responsible for muscle contraction. Sarcomeres are highly organized structures composed of repeating filaments of actin and myosin proteins.

The arrangement of these filaments gives skeletal and cardiac muscle their characteristic striated appearance. Within a sarcomere, the actin filaments are thin and appear lighter, while the myosin filaments are thick and appear darker. These filaments overlap in a specific pattern, creating distinct zones and lines that define the boundaries of a sarcomere. The central region of the sarcomere containing only myosin is called the H zone, and the M line bisects the H zone. The A band corresponds to the length of the myosin filament, and the I band contains only actin filaments. The Z lines mark the boundaries between adjacent sarcomeres.

During muscle contraction, the myosin filaments slide past the actin filaments, shortening the sarcomere. This sliding filament theory explains how muscles generate force. The repetitive arrangement of sarcomeres along a muscle fiber allows for coordinated and powerful contractions. The precise structure and function of sarcomeres are crucial for all types of voluntary and involuntary muscle movement in the body.
