Reticuloendothelial system, also known as the mononuclear phagocyte system, is a network of phagocytic cells found in the reticular connective tissue of organs. These cells, primarily macrophages and their precursors, monocytes, play a crucial role in the body's immune defense by engulfing and removing foreign particles, pathogens, and cellular debris. The system is distributed throughout various organs, including the spleen, lymph nodes, liver (where they are known as Kupffer cells), bone marrow, and lungs (where they are called alveolar macrophages).

The reticuloendothelial system functions as a vital component of both innate and adaptive immunity. Its primary roles include phagocytosis, antigen presentation, and the production of cytokines. By engulfing and digesting foreign invaders, these cells help to clear infections and prevent the spread of disease. They also process and present antigens to lymphocytes, initiating a specific immune response. Furthermore, the cytokines released by these cells modulate inflammatory processes and influence the behavior of other immune cells. Dysfunction of the reticuloendothelial system can impair the body's ability to fight infections and can contribute to the development of various diseases.
