Restrictiemodificatie is a biological system found in bacteria that protects their own DNA from being degraded by restriction enzymes. Restriction enzymes, also known as restriction endonucleases, are cellular nucleases that cleave DNA at specific recognition nucleotide sequences. The restriction-modification system consists of two components: a restriction enzyme and a modification enzyme, usually a methyltransferase.
