Respirationssystemet, also known as the respiratory system, is a biological system responsible for gas exchange in humans and many other animals. Its primary function is to deliver oxygen from the atmosphere to the bloodstream and remove carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular metabolism. This process is vital for maintaining the body's overall homeostasis and supporting cellular functions.

The human respiratory system consists of the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The upper respiratory tract includes the nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and pharynx. These structures warm, humidify, and filter the incoming air. The lower respiratory tract comprises the larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli. The alveoli are tiny, sac-like structures where gas exchange occurs through thin walls supported by a network of capillaries.

Breathing, or ventilation, is controlled by the respiratory centers in the brainstem, specifically the medulla oblongata and pons. These centers regulate the rate and depth of breathing based on carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the blood. During inhalation, the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract, expanding the thoracic cavity and pulling air into the lungs. Exhalation is usually passive, involving relaxation of these muscles, which causes the lungs to deflate and air to be expelled.

The respiratory system also plays a role in other bodily functions, such as filtering pathogens and particles, regulating blood pH, and producing speech through vocal cord vibrations. Its efficiency is crucial for sustaining life and supporting physical activity.

Maintaining respiratory health involves avoiding pollutants, managing allergies, and preventing infections. Diseases related to this system include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia.
