Reseptorityypillä is a Finnish term that translates to "receptor type" in English. In biology and pharmacology, a receptor is a protein molecule, typically located on the surface of or within a cell, that binds to a specific molecule (a ligand) and initiates a cellular response. The concept of receptor type is fundamental to understanding how cells communicate with each other and how drugs exert their effects.

Different receptor types are characterized by their structure, location within the cell, and the specific signaling pathways they activate upon binding to their ligand. For example, some receptors are ion channels that open or close upon ligand binding, altering the flow of ions across the cell membrane. Others are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a large family of receptors that activate intracellular signaling cascades through intermediary proteins called G proteins. Alternatively, a drug can act as an antagonist, binding to the receptor without activating it and blocking the natural ligand from binding, thus preventing receptor activation. The specificity of drugs for particular receptor types contributes to their therapeutic effects and can also be the source of side effects if the drug interacts with unintended receptors.
