Ravintoverkosto, often translated as food web, describes the intricate feeding relationships between different organisms within an ecosystem. It illustrates who eats whom, moving beyond the simpler linear concept of a food chain. A food web is composed of multiple interconnected food chains, demonstrating the complex flow of energy through an environment.

At the base of most food webs are producers, typically plants or algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. Primary consumers, herbivores, feed on these producers. Secondary consumers, carnivores or omnivores, then eat the primary consumers. Tertiary consumers, at higher trophic levels, prey on secondary consumers, and so on. Detritivores and decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning nutrients to the soil or water, which then become available for producers, thus completing the cycle.

The structure of a food web is dynamic and can vary significantly depending on the ecosystem. For instance, a marine food web will differ greatly from a terrestrial one. The health and stability of an ecosystem are directly linked to the complexity and diversity of its food web. If one species within the web declines or disappears, it can have ripple effects throughout the entire system, impacting other species that rely on it for food or that are preyed upon by it.
