Ravintoketjuilla, often translated as food chains, describe the linear sequence of organisms where nutrients and energy are transferred from one organism to another as one eats the other. In an ecosystem, these chains illustrate the feeding relationships and the flow of energy.

At the base of most terrestrial food chains are producers, typically plants or algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, which are herbivores. Secondary consumers are carnivores or omnivores that eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are carnivores or omnivores that eat secondary consumers, and sometimes higher-level consumers exist. Each level in a food chain is called a trophic level.

The energy transfer between trophic levels is not perfectly efficient; a significant portion of energy is lost as heat at each step. This inefficiency limits the length of most food chains. When an organism dies, decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down the dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil, which then can be used by producers, thus completing the nutrient cycle.

In reality, ecosystems are more complex than a single linear food chain. Multiple interconnected food chains form a food web, which provides a more accurate representation of the feeding relationships and energy flow within an ecosystem. Understanding these chains and webs is crucial for comprehending ecosystem dynamics and the impact of changes, such as species loss or introduction.
