Radioatividade is a property of certain elements that have unstable atomic nuclei, which undergo radioactive decay. This process involves the emission of radiation in the form of particles and energy. The nucleus can be considered unstable due to an imbalance between the number of protons and neutrons it contains, causing it to transition into a more stable state.

During radioactive decay, the unstable atom loses energy by emitting radiation, which can take the form of alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma radiation. Alpha particles are heavy ions consisting of two protons and two neutrons, while beta particles are high-energy electrons. Gamma radiation, on the other hand, consists of high-energy electromagnetic waves.

Radioactivity can occur through various modes, including alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay. Alpha decay involves the emission of alpha particles, while beta decay involves the emission of beta particles. Gamma decay, however, occurs when an atom transitions to a higher or lower energy state.

Radioactivity was first recognized in 1896 by Henri Becquerel, who discovered that uranium salts emitted rays that could penetrate solid objects and cause photographic plates to become exposed. Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie later isolated the elements polonium and radium, which they found to be highly radioactive.

The phenomenon of radioactivity has numerous applications in fields such as medicine, industry, and energy production. Radioisotopes are used in medicine for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. In industry, radioactive materials are used to detect defects in materials and to track the movement of fluids. Nuclear power plants also generate electricity through the process of nuclear fission.
