Quasietymological refers to a word or phrase that appears to have a clear, logical origin or meaning based on its components, but this origin is actually incorrect or misleading. The term itself is a portmanteau of "quasi" meaning "almost" or "resembling" and "etymological" relating to the origin and history of words. A quasietymology is therefore an almost-etymology, a mistaken or fabricated explanation for a word's meaning or form that sounds plausible but is not historically accurate.

These false etymologies can arise for several reasons. Sometimes they are born from folk etymology, where speakers reanalyze a word based on their current understanding of language, leading to a new, incorrect explanation. In other instances, they might be deliberate fabrications, perhaps for humor or to create a sense of authority. They can also stem from misunderstandings or coincidental resemblances between words.
