Pyrofosfaatti, also known as pyrophosphate or diphosphate, is an inorganic anion with the chemical formula [P2O7]4-. It is formed by the dehydration of two phosphate molecules, releasing a molecule of water. This linkage, the P-O-P bond, is characteristic of all pyrophosphates. Pyrophosphate can exist in various forms depending on the pH, including the pyrophosphate ion itself, as well as its protonated forms.

In biological systems, pyrophosphate plays a crucial role as an intermediate in metabolic pathways. It is released during the hydrolysis of high-energy phosphate compounds like adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This hydrolysis reaction, catalyzed by enzymes, provides energy for numerous cellular processes. For example, ATP is hydrolyzed to adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and pyrophosphate during DNA and RNA synthesis, as well as during the activation of fatty acids and amino acids.

The subsequent hydrolysis of pyrophosphate to two phosphate ions, a reaction catalyzed by pyrophosphatase enzymes, is thermodynamically favorable and helps to drive forward the reactions that produce pyrophosphate. This continuous cycle of formation and hydrolysis is essential for maintaining cellular energy balance.

Beyond its metabolic functions, pyrophosphates are also used in various industrial applications. They can act as chelating agents, sequestering metal ions, and are employed in detergents, water treatment, and as food additives to prevent spoilage and improve texture. Certain mineral forms of pyrophosphate, such as calcium pyrophosphate, can also be involved in pathological conditions like pseudogout.
