pulmonalisartär
The pulmonalisartär, also known as the pulmonary artery, is a major artery that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs. It is the only artery in the adult body that carries deoxygenated blood. The pulmonalisartär originates from the right ventricle and quickly branches into the left and right pulmonary arteries, which lead to the corresponding lungs. Within the lungs, these arteries further subdivide into smaller vessels, eventually reaching the capillaries surrounding the alveoli. Here, carbon dioxide is released from the blood, and oxygen is absorbed. The oxygenated blood then returns to the left atrium of the heart via the pulmonary veins. The pulmonalisartär plays a crucial role in the pulmonary circulation, facilitating gas exchange essential for respiration. Its structure is adapted to carry blood at a lower pressure compared to systemic arteries, reflecting the shorter and lower-resistance pathway through the lungs.
