A psychrometer is an instrument used to measure the moisture content or humidity of the air. The dry-bulb thermometer measures the actual air temperature, while the wet-bulb thermometer measures the temperature after the bulb has been moistened and the water has evaporated.

The psychrometer operates on the principle that water evaporates from the wet-bulb thermometer, causing a cooling effect. The rate of evaporation depends on the humidity of the air. In dry air, the water evaporates quickly, resulting in a significant drop in temperature. In humid air, the evaporation is slower, and the temperature drop is less pronounced.

By comparing the readings of the two thermometers, one can determine the relative humidity of the air. The difference between the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures is used to calculate the relative humidity using psychrometric charts or formulas.

Psychrometers are widely used in meteorology, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, and various industrial applications where monitoring humidity is crucial. They are simple, inexpensive, and provide a direct measurement of humidity without the need for complex electronic sensors. However, they require manual reading and interpretation, which can be less convenient compared to electronic humidity sensors.
