Protonikytketty is a Finnish term that translates to "proton-coupled" in English. It describes a type of biological or chemical process where the movement or interaction of a proton across a membrane or within a system is directly linked to another event. This coupling is a fundamental mechanism in many biological systems, particularly in energy transduction.

In the context of cellular respiration and photosynthesis, proton coupling is essential for ATP synthesis. During these processes, protons are pumped across a membrane, creating an electrochemical gradient. The flow of these protons back across the membrane through an enzyme called ATP synthase is then used to drive the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main energy currency of the cell. This is often referred to as chemiosmosis or the chemiosmotic theory.

Proton coupling is not limited to ATP synthesis. It also plays a role in the transport of various molecules across cell membranes.
