A primärproducent, or primary producer, is an organism that produces its own food, usually through photosynthesis. These organisms form the base of most food webs on Earth. They convert inorganic materials into organic compounds that can be consumed by other organisms. The most common type of primary producer is a plant, which uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create glucose, a sugar that serves as its energy source. Algae and some bacteria, such as cyanobacteria, are also primary producers.

In aquatic ecosystems, phytoplankton, a type of microscopic algae, are the dominant primary producers. They are responsible for a significant portion of the Earth's oxygen production. In terrestrial environments, plants, ranging from grasses to trees, fulfill this role. The energy captured by primary producers is transferred to herbivores (primary consumers) when they eat the producers, and then to carnivores (secondary and tertiary consumers) as they consume other animals.

The process of photosynthesis is crucial for primary producers. It involves capturing light energy and using it to synthesize organic molecules from carbon dioxide and water. This process releases oxygen as a byproduct, which is essential for the respiration of most living organisms. Without primary producers, the flow of energy through ecosystems would cease, and life as we know it would not be possible.
