Prefiksform, or prefix form, is a word form created when a prefix is attached to a base word. The prefix is a bound morpheme that appears at the beginning of the word and typically alters its meaning; it can also influence the grammatical category or usage of the base. Prefiksforms are a central concern of derivational morphology, helping to expand vocabulary by producing new words from existing bases.

Examples in English illustrate the concept: unhappy combines the prefix un- with the base happy to form a word with the opposite meaning; redo uses the prefix re- to indicate repetition; misinterpret adds mis- to reflect an incorrect interpretation. Some prefiksforms can be complex, featuring more than one prefix or combining with suffixes, as in unfriendly or disconnect, where prefixes contribute to the overall structure of the word.

Prefiksforms are distinct from the base or lemma of a word, which is the uninflected or canonical form used as an entry in dictionaries. They can also interact with inflectional processes, producing forms that are both prefiksforms and inflected forms (for example, unhappier, which combines a prefix with a comparative suffix). While many prefixes are used to derive new words with related meanings, not all languages rely on prefixes to the same extent; others rely primarily on suffixes or infixes.

In linguistics and natural language processing, recognizing prefiksforms is important for tasks such as stemming, lemmatization, and morphological analysis. Prefix-stripping algorithms aim to recover the base form by removing known prefixes, though irregularities and multi-layer derivations can complicate this process.
