Polyenejärjestelmät, often translated as polyene systems or conjugated polyenes, refer to organic molecules containing two or more carbon-carbon double bonds separated by a single carbon-carbon bond. This alternating pattern of double and single bonds is known as conjugation. The extent of conjugation, meaning the number of conjugated double bonds, significantly influences the physical and chemical properties of the molecule.

Conjugation leads to delocalization of pi electrons across the entire system. This delocalization is responsible for several characteristic features of polyenes. For instance, conjugated polyenes typically absorb light in the visible or ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which gives many of them their color. The longer the conjugated system, the lower the energy of the absorbed light, and thus the longer the wavelength (redder color).

Chemically, polyenes are more reactive than isolated alkenes. The delocalized electrons make the system more stable but also more susceptible to addition reactions. Electrophilic addition is a common reaction, often occurring across the conjugated system. Furthermore, polyenes can undergo polymerization, forming long chains of repeating units. Examples of naturally occurring polyenes include beta-carotene, a pigment found in carrots and other plants, and lycopene, the pigment in tomatoes. Synthetic polyenes are used in various applications, including dyes, pigments, and as building blocks for polymers.
