Polinomët are fundamental algebraic expressions. A polynomial is an expression consisting of variables and coefficients, that involves only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer exponents of variables. The term "polynomial" comes from poly (many) and nomial (term). A simple example of a polynomial is 3x^2 + 2x - 5. Here, 'x' is the variable, '3', '2', and '-5' are the coefficients, and the numbers '2' and '1' (for the '2x' term) are the exponents. The constant term is -5.

The degree of a polynomial is the highest exponent of the variable. In the example 3x^2 + 2x - 5, the degree is 2. Polynomials can have one variable (univariate) or multiple variables (multivariate). For instance, x^2y + 3xy^2 - 7 is a multivariate polynomial. The terms of a polynomial are separated by addition or subtraction.

Polynomials are classified by their degree and the number of terms. A polynomial with one term is called a monomial, two terms is a binomial, and three terms is a trinomial. For example, 5x is a monomial, 2x + 1 is a binomial, and x^2 + 3x - 4 is a trinomial. Polynomials are crucial in algebra, calculus, and many areas of mathematics and science, used to model curves, solve equations, and approximate functions.
