Polümerisatsioonitüübid refer to the different mechanisms by which monomers combine to form polymers. The primary classifications are addition polymerization and condensation polymerization.

Addition polymerization involves monomers adding to one another in such a way that the repeating unit has the same atomic composition as the original monomer. This process typically occurs with monomers containing double or triple bonds, such as alkenes. The polymerization proceeds through a chain reaction involving initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Common examples include polyethylene and polypropylene.

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves monomers that react with each other to form larger structural units while releasing smaller molecules as byproducts, such as water or methanol. These reactions usually involve functional groups on the monomers, like hydroxyl or carboxyl groups. Polyesters and polyamides are formed through condensation polymerization.

A third, less common type, is ring-opening polymerization. In this mechanism, cyclic monomers open their rings to form a linear polymer. This can occur via ionic or radical pathways and is used to produce polymers like nylon-6 from caprolactam.

The choice of polymerization type depends on the specific monomer structure and desired polymer properties. Each type has distinct advantages and disadvantages regarding reaction conditions, control over molecular weight, and the resulting polymer architecture.
