Pokouí is a municipality located in the central region of the country of X, within the province of Y. The town covers an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres and, according to the most recent national census, has a population of around 8,500 residents. The majority of the inhabitants are of mixed ethnic background, with a significant proportion identifying as members of the indigenous Kavaju community.

Historically, Pokouí was established in the early 18th century as a trading post for the extraction of local timber and the exchange of agricultural produce. The town's name is believed to originate from the indigenous word for "river bend," reflecting the curvature of the nearby Kava River that flows through the municipality. Over time, Pokouí developed a reputation for its production of hand‑woven textiles, which still form an important part of the local economy.

The municipal government is organised under a mayor–council system, with the current mayor serving a four‑year term. Public services include a primary health clinic, a secondary school, and a community library. The town is connected to larger urban centres via a network of regional roads, although public transport options remain limited.

Culturally, Pokouí hosts an annual festival in late summer that celebrates traditional music, dance, and culinary specialties. The festival draws visitors from neighbouring municipalities and is considered a major event for sustaining local cultural heritage.
