Podol, also known as Podole or Podillia, is a historical and geographical region located in western Ukraine and a small part of eastern Moldova. It is situated in the fertile plains along the Dniester River. The region has a rich and complex history, having been inhabited by various peoples over millennia, including Scythians, Sarmatians, Slavs, and later influenced by Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian rule.

The fertile black soil, known as chernozem, has made Podol a significant agricultural area, particularly for grain production. Historically, it was an important crossroads for trade routes, contributing to its economic and cultural development. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and river valleys.

Politically, Podol has experienced shifting borders and allegiances throughout its history. It was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for several centuries before being absorbed into the Russian Empire. Following World War I and the Russian Revolution, it became part of the Ukrainian People's Republic and subsequently the Soviet Union. Today, the majority of Podol is within Ukraine, with a small portion in Moldova. The region is known for its historical towns, agricultural landscapes, and its enduring cultural heritage.
