Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are tiny, irregular-shaped cell fragments that circulate in the blood of all mammals. They are not true cells but are derived from large precursor cells called megakaryocytes found in the bone marrow. Platelets play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets are activated and adhere to the site of damage. They then aggregate together, forming a temporary plug that seals the wound.
In addition to their role in clot formation, platelets release various growth factors and signaling molecules.
