Piilukkokiväärit are a type of firearm that utilizes a flintlock mechanism to ignite the gunpowder. This mechanism consists of a hammer that holds a piece of flint, a steel frizzen, and a pan containing priming powder. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer falls, striking the frizzen. The impact creates sparks that ignite the priming powder in the pan, which then ignites the main charge in the barrel, propelling the projectile.

The flintlock mechanism was a significant advancement over earlier ignition systems like matchlocks and wheellocks, offering greater reliability and ease of use. It became the dominant firearm ignition system in Europe and the Americas from the late 17th century through the first half of the 19th century. Flintlock muskets were standard issue for many armies during this period, and flintlock pistols were common for military and civilian use.

Despite their historical importance, flintlock firearms were eventually superseded by percussion cap systems, which provided even greater reliability, especially in wet conditions.
