perikaryons
A perikaryon, also known as a soma, is the cell body of a neuron. It contains the nucleus and the majority of the cell's organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and mitochondria. The perikaryon is responsible for maintaining the neuron's life and function, synthesizing proteins and other essential molecules. It receives signals from other neurons through dendrites and transmits signals to other neurons or effector cells through the axon. The cytoplasm of the perikaryon is called the neuroplasm, and it contains neurofilaments and neurotubules that provide structural support and aid in the transport of materials. The perikaryon is a crucial component of the nervous system, playing a vital role in information processing and communication. Damage or dysfunction of the perikaryon can lead to neurodegenerative diseases and other neurological disorders.
