Perikardiaalitilana is a Latin term referring to the pericardial space. This is a potential space, meaning it doesn't typically contain a significant amount of fluid under normal physiological conditions. It is located between the two layers of the pericardium, the serous pericardium which is a double-layered membrane that surrounds the heart. The outer layer is the parietal pericardium, which is fused to the fibrous pericardium, the tough outer sac. The inner layer is the visceral pericardium, also known as the epicardium, which is directly attached to the surface of the heart muscle.

The pericardial space normally contains a small amount of pericardial fluid, typically around 15-50 milliliters. This fluid acts as a lubricant, allowing the heart to beat smoothly within the pericardial sac without friction. The presence of this fluid is crucial for efficient cardiac function.

Pathological conditions can lead to an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the pericardial space. This condition is known as pericardial effusion. Causes of pericardial effusion are diverse and can include infections, inflammation, trauma, malignancy, and certain medical conditions like heart failure or kidney disease. An excessive accumulation of fluid can put pressure on the heart, restricting its ability to fill and pump effectively, a condition called cardiac tamponade. Diagnosis of issues related to the pericardial space often involves imaging techniques such as echocardiography or CT scans.
