Passbandmodulatsiooni, also known as passband transmission or passband signaling, is a method used in telecommunications to transmit digital data over a communication channel. Unlike baseband transmission, where the signal is sent directly at its original frequencies, passband modulation shifts the signal to a higher frequency range, known as the passband. This is essential for transmission over channels that are not suitable for baseband signals, such as radio frequency channels or certain wired connections.

The core idea involves using a carrier wave with a specific frequency. The digital data, represented as a sequence of bits, is used to modify or modulate one or more characteristics of this carrier wave, such as its amplitude, frequency, or phase. Common passband modulation techniques include Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), and Phase Shift Keying (PSK), as well as combinations like Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).

By shifting the signal to a passband, several advantages are realized. It allows for multiplexing, where multiple signals can share the same physical medium by occupying different passbands. It also helps in overcoming limitations of the transmission medium, such as attenuation at lower frequencies or the presence of noise. The receiver then needs to demodulate the signal, extracting the original digital data by reversing the modulation process.
