Pariteetsümmeetria, often referred to as P-sümmeetria, is a fundamental concept in theoretical physics, particularly in quantum field theory. It describes a symmetry under spatial inversion, meaning that the laws of physics remain unchanged if the spatial coordinates (x, y, z) are replaced by their negative counterparts (-x, -y, -z). This operation is also known as parity transformation.

In simpler terms, imagine a physical process occurring. If P-sümmeetria holds, then the exact same process, viewed in a mirror image, should proceed identically. This implies that the intrinsic properties of particles, such as their spin, should behave predictably under such a transformation. Particles can be classified as either having even parity (where the parity operator acting on the particle's state results in the same state) or odd parity (where it results in the negative of the state).

Historically, parity was assumed to be a universally conserved symmetry, meaning that the total parity of a system would remain constant during interactions. However, experiments in the mid-20th century, particularly those involving the weak nuclear force, revealed that parity is not conserved in all interactions. This discovery was a significant turning point in particle physics, leading to a deeper understanding of the fundamental forces and the nature of elementary particles. Despite the non-conservation of parity in the weak interaction, it remains a crucial concept for understanding other fundamental forces like electromagnetism and the strong nuclear force, where it is conserved.
