Orrsövény refers to the nasal septum, the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two distinct nostrils. This structure is crucial for directing airflow within the nose and plays a role in humidifying and filtering inhaled air. The septum is composed of several parts, including the quadrangular cartilage anteriorly and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone and the vomer posteriorly. Its integrity is important for normal nasal function.

Deviations or perforations of the nasal septum can lead to various symptoms. A deviated septum, where the septum is significantly off-center, can obstruct airflow in one or both nostrils, potentially causing difficulty breathing, nasal congestion, nosebleeds, and recurrent sinus infections. A septal perforation is a hole in the septum, which can result from trauma, surgery, or certain medical conditions. Symptoms of a perforation may include crusting, whistling sounds during breathing, and recurrent nosebleeds.

Medical evaluation of the nasal septum typically involves a physical examination using a nasal speculum and a light source. In some cases, imaging studies like a CT scan may be used to assess the extent of deviation or other abnormalities. Treatment for septal issues depends on the severity of the condition and the symptoms experienced. Mild deviations may not require treatment, while significant deviations causing breathing problems or other complications can be surgically corrected through a procedure called septoplasty. Septal perforations may be managed with nasal saline sprays and ointments to reduce crusting, or in severe cases, surgical repair may be considered.
