The oropharynx is the part of the throat behind the oral cavity. It extends from the soft palate superiorly to the level of the hyoid bone inferiorly. This region is a crucial passageway for both air and food. Anatomically, it is bordered anteriorly by the palatoglossal arches and the base of the tongue, and posteriorly by the pharyngeal wall. The tonsils, also known as palatine tonsils, are located on either side of the oropharynx within the tonsillar fossae. The uvula, a fleshy extension of the soft palate, hangs down into the oropharynx. The lingual tonsils are found on the posterior surface of the tongue, at the base of the oropharynx.

The oropharynx plays a significant role in several bodily functions. It is involved in swallowing (deglutition), where the bolus of food is propelled from the mouth into the pharynx. It also contributes to speech by modifying the resonance of sound. Furthermore, it is a common site for infections, such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis, which are inflammation of the tonsils and pharynx, respectively. The oropharynx is also an area where various medical conditions can manifest, including oral cancer. Medical professionals often examine the oropharynx during routine physical examinations to assess the health of the throat and surrounding structures.
