Oppervlaktematen are units used to measure the size of a two-dimensional surface. They quantify how much space a flat area occupies. The most common system for surface measurements is the metric system, which is based on the meter.

The fundamental unit of surface area in the metric system is the square meter (m²). This represents the area of a square with sides of one meter each. Larger areas are measured using multiples of the square meter, such as the square kilometer (km²), which is equivalent to a square with sides of one kilometer. Smaller areas use prefixes to denote fractions of a square meter, like the square centimeter (cm²) and the square millimeter (mm²). A square centimeter is the area of a square with sides of one centimeter, and a square millimeter is the area of a square with sides of one millimeter.

Conversions between these units are based on the square of the conversion factor between the linear units. For instance, since 1 meter equals 100 centimeters, 1 square meter equals 100 cm × 100 cm, which is 10,000 square centimeters. Similarly, 1 square kilometer equals 1,000 meters × 1,000 meters, or 1,000,000 square meters.

Beyond the metric system, other systems exist. In the imperial and US customary systems, units like the square foot (ft²) and the square mile (mi²) are used. While less common in scientific contexts, these units are still prevalent in certain regions and for specific applications. Understanding surface measurements is crucial in fields ranging from construction and land surveying to design and everyday tasks.
