Oligodendrocytes are a type of glial cell found in the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. They are one of the several types of cells that support and protect neurons. The primary function of oligodendrocytes is to produce myelin, a fatty insulating sheath that surrounds the axons of nerve cells. This myelin sheath is crucial for the rapid and efficient transmission of electrical signals, known as action potentials, along the axons. Without proper myelination, nerve impulse conduction would be significantly slower and less effective.

Oligodendrocytes achieve myelination by extending processes that wrap around multiple axons, forming segments of the myelin sheath. A single oligodendrocyte can myelinate the axons of up to fifty different neurons. This process begins during development and continues into adulthood, though it is most active in early life. The myelin sheath is not continuous; it has gaps called nodes of Ranvier, which are essential for saltatory conduction, the process by which action potentials jump from one node to the next, greatly increasing conduction velocity.

Damage or dysfunction of oligodendrocytes and their myelin sheath is implicated in various neurological disorders, collectively known as demyelinating diseases. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prominent example, where the immune system attacks and destroys myelin in the CNS, leading to a wide range of neurological symptoms. Research into understanding oligodendrocyte biology and myelin repair is a significant area of neuroscience, aiming to find therapeutic strategies for these debilitating conditions.
