The term originates from the observation that many substances react with oxygen, a process that was initially termed "oxidation" from the Greek words "oxys" (acid) and "genos" (origin), as oxygen was believed to be the source of all acids. Early alchemists and chemists observed and documented various reactions involving air and combustion, but a clear theoretical framework was lacking.

The concept of oxidation began to take shape with the work of Antoine Lavoisier in the late 18th century. Lavoisier's meticulous experiments demonstrated that combustion was a process of rapid combination with a component of air, which he named oxygen. He also proposed that rusting and calcination were slower forms of oxidation. This marked a significant shift from the phlogiston theory, which posited an invisible substance released during burning.

Throughout the 19th century, as the understanding of elements and chemical reactions grew, the definition of oxidation expanded beyond reactions with oxygen. Jöns Jacob Berzelius introduced the concept of electrochemistry, and it became clear that oxidation involved the loss of electrons, regardless of whether oxygen was involved. This more general definition, involving changes in oxidation states, is the foundation of modern chemical understanding of oxidation.
