Närvikoe is a Finnish term that translates to nerve tissue or nervous tissue in English. It is one of the four basic types of tissue found in the human and animal body, alongside epithelial tissue, connective tissue, and muscle tissue. Nerve tissue is specialized for receiving stimuli and conducting electrical impulses, enabling rapid communication throughout the body.

The primary functional units of nerve tissue are neurons, also known as nerve cells. Neurons are highly specialized cells that transmit signals. They typically consist of a cell body (soma), dendrites which receive signals from other neurons, and an axon which transmits signals to other neurons, muscles, or glands. Supporting cells called glial cells, or neuroglia, also form a crucial part of nerve tissue. Glial cells provide structural support, nourishment, and insulation to neurons, and play a role in maintaining the overall health and function of the nervous system.

Nerve tissue is organized into two main divisions: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS comprises the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS consists of all the nerves that extend from the CNS to the rest of the body. This intricate network of nerve tissue allows for complex functions such as thought, movement, sensation, and regulation of internal bodily processes. Damage to nerve tissue can lead to a wide range of neurological disorders.
