Neutrofilai are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the innate immune system. They are the most abundant type of granulocyte and the most abundant type of phagocyte in most vertebrates. Neutrophils are essential for fighting bacterial infections and fungal infections. They are also involved in the inflammatory response.

Neutrophils are produced in the bone marrow. Once released into the bloodstream, they circulate for a few days before migrating to tissues. In response to chemical signals released by damaged cells or pathogens, neutrophils are attracted to sites of infection or inflammation. This process is called chemotaxis.

Upon reaching the site of infection, neutrophils engulf and destroy pathogens through a process called phagocytosis. They can also release antimicrobial substances and reactive oxygen species to kill microbes. Neutrophils are short-lived cells and are a major component of pus.

The number of neutrophils in the blood can be an indicator of health. An elevated neutrophil count, known as neutrophilia, can be a sign of infection or inflammation. Conversely, a low neutrophil count, known as neutropenia, can make an individual more susceptible to infections. This condition can be caused by various factors, including certain medications, autoimmune diseases, or bone marrow disorders.
